    A database that offers over 11.000 references to social science periodicals. It also contains special references to peace, human rights and international law research institutes.
  • MOST - Management of Social Trasformations Programme
    A research programme, designed by UNESCO, to promote international comparative social science research. It supports large-scale, long-term autonomous research and transfers the relevant findings and data to decision-makers. It also publishes state of the art reports that assess existing information on specific topics. MOST concentrates on three research areas: multi-cultural and multi-ethnic societies; cities as arenas of accelerated social transformation, and globalization and Governance. The overall long-term objective of MOST is to establish sustainable links between the scientific and policy communities and to emphasize the relevance of social science research for policy-formulation.
  • NESSTAR - Networked Social Science Tools and Resources
    An infrastructure for data dissemination via the Internet created by a consortium of data archives. NESSTAR Explorer is an end user interface for searching, analysing and downloading data and documentation via the Internet. NESSTAR Publisher is used by data archives to disseminate data and documentation. By means of NESSTAR you are able to (1) locate multiple data sources across national boundaries, (2) browse detailed metadata about these data, (3) analyze and visualize data online, and (4) download the appropriate subsets of data in one of a number of formats for local use. The general aim of the project is to develop a common interface on the Internet to the data holdings of a large number of providers and disseminators of statistical information world-wide.

      The LSMS surveys are multi-topic, household questionnaires which have been an important tool in measuring household welfare and understanding household behavior in developing countries.       A series of books prepared by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the Department of the Army. This online series presently contains studies of 101 countries and regions. Countries that were previously in multi-country volumes are now available individually. Most books in the series deal with a particular foreign country, describing and analyzing its political, economic, social, and national security systems and institutions, and examining the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors.     • State of the Nation's Cities: A Comprehensive Database on American Cities and Suburbs (Center for Urban Policy Research, Rutgers University). Part of a contribution to the United Nations' Habitat II conference in Istanbul in June 1996. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) contracted with the Center for Urban Policy Research to assemble a comprehensive database on 77 American cities and suburbs. The database brings together over 3,000 variables from a wide variety of sources, allowing easy comparability of indicators on employment and economic development, demographic measures, housing and land use, income and poverty, fiscal conditions, and a host of other health, social, and environmental indicators. Data files are available for download in several formats (Tab-delimited ASCII, SPSS portable file, Excel, and SAS).

      • U.S. Census Bureau: TIGER Mapping Service
        A public resource for generating high-quality, detailed maps of anywhere in the United States, using public geographic data. It allows you to turn layers on and off and draw statistical maps from Census data. You can also choose the census level (tract, county, etc.) and "theme" to map (e.g., household size, age, race, etc.).

      The US Central Intelligence Agency released the latest in this annual series of country information reference books. Data is available for over 250 countries. For each country, map and flag, geographic, population, government, economic, transportation, communication, and defense information is provided for the latest year available. Users can browse the whole country list, by continent, or by subject. The entire book is available in compressed (.gz) plain text and rich text format (.rtf). The agency also offers name information for chiefs of state and cabinet members< for over 190 countries.
    • Yale University: StatCat
      StatCat (formerly the Social Science Data Archive) is the repository and reference center at Yale for machine-readable data sources in the social sciences. StatCat maintains a major collection of data from academic surveys, public opinion surveys, government agencies, international organizations, and related groups. SSDA codebooks and reference services are available through the Social Science Library and Information Services; the Social Science Statistical Laboratory provides technical assistance for dataset users. Most of the SSDA holdings are restricted to use by the Yale community. Users can search for authors, titels, subjects and abstracts, and browse the data catalog by broad subject areas.

    A Large Scale Facility for European Research and Data Analysis, under the Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) Programme of the European Commission. It conducts and facilitates the empirical study of social and economic change by integrating longitudinal and cross-national European datasets, providing the support services required for their analyses, and acting as the host for major substantive research programmes.

    A common interface for searching a database of online working papers relevant to European integration.   • Centre for Applied Social Surveys - CASS
    CASS is an ESRC Resource Centre run jointly by the SCPR and the University of Southampton, with the University of Surrey. It provides short courses in survey methods and is developing a survey Question Bank for use by social scientists and social researchers in the academic world, government, market research and the independent and voluntary sectors.
  • Edinburgh Data and INformation Access - EDINA 
    Provides national on-line services of the UK higher education and research community. None of EDINA's services involve any cost to the end user. In most cases, services require both institutional subscription and end-user registration.
  • UK Data Archive - UKDA
    A specialist national resource containing the largest collection of accessible computer-readable data in the social sciences and humanities in the UK. Through this web pages it is also possible to search the catalogues of other national archives for computer readable data and to use the services of the Data Archive to acquire these data on your behalf. The Archive is funded jointly by the University of Essex where it is located, the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) and JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee). Searches are performed on catalogue records (study descriptions) and keywords describing the studies in the Archive's collection.

  • R·Cade - Resource Centre for Access to Data on Europe 
    An interdisciplinary resource centre that will help researchers and analysts to identify and acquire data for the European Social Sciences. It has been established in the UK in a partnership between the Centre for European Studies at the University of Durham and The Data Archive at the University of Essex. It provides efficient access to key statistical data about Europe. Official statistics are available from the European Union Statistical Office (Eurostat), United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).The services include online access to an integrated database via the Internet and World Wide Web, or customised data extraction to your requirements.   • UK Data Service
    A comprehensive resource funded by the ESRC to support researchers, teachers and policymakers who depend on high-quality social and economic data. Here you will find a single point of access to a wide range of secondary data including large-scale government surveys, international macrodata, business microdata, qualitative studies and census data from 1971 to 2011. All are backed with extensive support, training and guidance to meet the needs of data users, owners and creators.

    A databank which allows you to compose your tailor made data set. The research data are gathered by a telepanel. Users can combine data from different studies. CentERdata is affiliated to the CentER for Economic Research of the Brabant University. Its core business is the exploitation of a computerized household panel.
  • Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek - CBS 
    The Central Bureau of Statistics of the Netherlands collects, processes and analyses data and publishes the statistical results. Many data are available online; see FiguresThemes, and Web publications. The StatLine Database contains up to date developments of some key social and economic indicators (including population, labour, manufacturing output and prices). The indicators are updated daily.

    • Data Archiving and Networked Services - DANS
      A national organization responsible for storing and providing permanent access to research data from the Humanities and Social Sciences. The Steinmetz Archive and the Netherlands Historical Data Archive (NHDA) have become part of DANS.
    • Nederlandse Onderzoek Databank - NOD (Dutch version)
      A Dutch research database from the KNAW (Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences). It contains information on current research projects, researchers, and research institutes in the Netherlands and Flanders.
  • Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau - SCP
    A research organisation which operates on an interdepartmental basis. On behalf of the government it provides building-blocks for policy formation in the social and cultural fields.   • World Database of Happiness 
    A register of scientific research on subjective appeciation of life ('life-satisfaction' or 'happiness'). The database involves four components:
    1. Bibliography of Happiness
      Contemporary studies on subjective appreciation of life; with detailed subject index.
    2. Item bank
      All indicators that tap happiness, mostly single questions. Each item is presented full text and with links to studies that used the measure. The measures are classified by focus, time reference, mode of observation, rating and wording.
    3. Distributional Findings on Happiness in Nations and Happines in Publics
      Results of representative surveys on subjective appreciation of life in 56 nations since 1946.
    4. Correlational Findings on Happiness 
      Mini-abstracts of correlational research findings, ordered by subject-matter, time and nation (7838 findings from 603 studies in 69 nations).
    5. Directory of Hapsiness Investigators
      Names and addresses of scientists who have published on subjective appreciation of life. Free available on request.
