Distributed Work Arrangements: Impacts of Advanced Information Technologies, Work Coordination Mechanisms, and Communication Requirements
Recent developments in information technology have enabled downsizing, globalizing and virtualizing of organizations. One such trend is the creation of new distributed work structures and arrangements. These new work arrangements and organizational designs (from supplemental work at home to completely virutal organizations) have met with varying success. This study investigated whether various types of infomration system and communication technologies have differing impacts on the success of distributed work arrangements, given the work coordination and communication required for a work group.

You’ve got maps, your fly rod, a cell phone, cigarette-lighter adapters up the yazoo, and all you need is the odd Kinko’s, a payphone here and there, and a good friend to do it with.”

The study by the Georgetown University School of Business for Bell Atlantic surveyed telecommuters at several companies -- including American Express, Marriott International, Fannie Mae and Bellcore -- over a period of several months. The telecommuting study was designed and conducted for Bell Atlantic by Dr. Lamar Reinsch. It was among the first of its kind to examine the "human dimension" of telecommuting. Three quarters of the workers surveyed reported that their work was more productive when telecommuting and 83 percent said that telecommuting had changed their home lives for the better. Overall, the results indicated that companies can anticipate enormous success from telecommuting programs if management makes a commitment to support teleworkers with training, technology and flexibility.

Environmental and Social Impacts of Telecommuting and Teleactivities
A senior thesis that concentrates on the effects of communication and transportation technologies on urban form and function. Do developments in transportation and communication technologies produce urban settlements that are considerably more dispersed, varied, and space-consuming than they ever were in the past? Will the advances in computing and telecommunications technologies fuel further urban sprawl and capital flight from central cities? Will advanced technologies reduce or increase urban density? Marcus argues that it is more likely that the centralizing effects of teleactivities will prevail, producing more compact urban areas composed of many small neighborhoods linked by transit to other neighborhoods and to the central city.

In: Proceedings of The Thirtieth Annual Hawwaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) Volume 4: Information Systems Track - Internet and the Digital Economy, 1997
Teleworking is not a unitary pattern of work, and the ways people do their work greatly affects how they take care of their children. The structure of their job, their interdependence and communication with coworkers and clients affect the control over the time and place of paid work. Those employees with more control over their immediate work conditions can do a wider range of child work than can those whose work is controlled by others in their work network. In sum, control over the time and place of paid work determines the ways they do their child care work.

  • Telecommuting Survey - KPMG (Canada)
A survey in 1,600 large and medium-sized companies in the private sector and 435 in the public center. It shows that telework occurs in almost all areas of the organizations, and that the teleworkers perform jobs at many levels, from senior management to clerical and administrative roles. The greatest increases are expected in professional, technical and middle management roles. The leading reason for initiating telework is to improve employee lifstyle. The most significant disadvantage is the lack of face-to-face contact. Therefor most respondents consider communication to be one of the most important factors in managing teleworkers. Employees reported no significant difference in performance management with respect to teleworkers as compared to on-site employees.

Teleworking and Teletrade in India: Combining Diverse Perspectives and Visions
In: Economic and Political Weekly, June 24, 2000 The rapid spread of information technology combined with the deregulation and upgrading of telecommunications in virtually all countries has given considerable impetus to outsourcing or delocalisation of work. This is happening within and across national boundaries and has been described as teleworking, taking different forms. The development of teleworking represents a convergence between a number of different trends, many of which have major implications for environmental, social and economic policy. How industry, the governments, the policy-makers respond to these changes will seriously impact on the future of the economy, on the employment possibilities as well as the quality of work-life of people.

A summary of key findings is presented to highlight the main issues in providing access to work for marginalised groups. Authors: Frank Wilson & Tony Swash.
