  59. Burt, Ronald [2000a] The Network Structures of Social Capital [pdf]
To appear in Research in Organizational Behavior, edited by Robert I. Sutton and Barry M. Staw, Jai Press, 2000.
A position paper on the network structure of social capital. Burt argues that research and theory will be better cumulate across studies if we focuson the network mechanisms responsible for social capital effects (such as protection within cloased networkds and brokerage across structural holes) rather than trying to integrate across metaphors of social capital loosely tied to distant empirical indicators. Social capital is clearly a function of brokerage across structural holes than closure within a network, but there are contingency factors.

  60. Burt, Ronald [2000b] Structural Holes versus Network Closure as Social Capital [pdf]
Forthcoming in Social Capital: Theory and Research, edited by Nan Lin, Karen S. Cook, and Ronald S. Burt, Il: Aldine de Gruyter, 2001.
Two network structures might create social capital. The closure argument is that social capital is created by a network of strongly interconnected elements. The structural hole argument is that social capital is created by a network in which people can broker connnections between otherwise disconnected segments. Burt argues that there is replicated empirical evidence on the social capital of structural holes, and that the contradiction between network closure and structural holes can be resolved in a more general network model of social capital. Brokerage across structural holes is the source of value added, but closure can be critical to realizing the value buried in structural holes.
